GLSEN Student Featured on USA Network Program
Characters Unite, USA Network's award-winning public service program focused on issues in social justice, will feature former GLSEN Student Ambassador Joey Kemmerling in a PSA documentary this evening.
In an online video spotlight, Joey discusses his experiences as a bullied LGBT teen with Victor Cruz of the New York Giants. Joey, now 19, talks about how he overcame anti-gay bullying at school and in locker rooms and eventually moved on to become an advocate for other LGBT youth. Cruz empathizes and tells Joey about being bullied in school on the basis of his race.
Characters Unite is an active partner in helping GLSEN realize its mission of making schools safer for all students. GLSEN honored Characters Unite at its Respect Awards — New York ceremony in 2013.
USA Network will air a compilation of the short videos tonight as a documentary titled NFL Characters Unite, about NFL stars overcoming bullying and prejudice and sharing their experiences with others. The program, including a portion on Joey's meeting with Victor Cruz, will air January 31, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.
