Manager of Major & Planned Gifts

Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Development, the Manager of Major Gifts will cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of donors who give at least $1,200 annually (Honor Society). The Manager will build on GLSEN's strong individual relationships, maintaining and growing support among existing funders and identify, cultivate and secure new funding. The manager will also be responsible for managing a new and growing planned giving program.

The Manager will be responsible for a portfolio of at least $2.0 million in revenue from more than 200 major donors.

Position Responsibilities

  • Generate financial support from individuals to support specific GLSEN programs as well as the general operating costs.
  • Facilitate regular contact between major donors and the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Development and the board as appropriate.
  • Produce high-quality written communications for funders at all stages of the development process, including letters of introduction, cases for support and proposals, solicitations, cultivation and ongoing donor communications, as well as estate planning materials.
  • Conduct research on major donor prospects and manage a portfolio of viable major donor prospects.
  • Develop cultivation, stewardship, solicitation and upgrade strategies for major donors and planned giving prospects including benefit management.
  • Build relationships with key individuals and community leaders and influencers.
  • Engage & develop relationships with constituents to build long-term organizational affinity - and maximize loyalty and financial support.
  • Execute major donor cultivation and solicitation events in key communities.
  • Solicit support through face-to-face and telephone meetings while maintaining ongoing, routine email and mail communications.
  • Utilize and provide support to the volunteer leadership - Board of Directors, the National Leadership Council and the Emeritus Board - and the organizations give/get policy to leverage contributions and increase revenue; identify and support the recruitment of new high net worth individuals to the board.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on major donors.
  • Manage budget; track program income, expenses and pledge receivables.
  • Other responsibilities as determined by organizational need and assigned by the Senior Director of Development.
  • Position Qualifications

  • 5+ years of development experience including a significant focus on major gifts and planned giving fundraising.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels and with diverse individuals, internally and externally.
  • Track record of writing successful solicitations and proposals, and closing significant contributions and planned gifts.
  • Proven leadership qualities and the ability to work in a dynamic, high-pressure and often reactive environment - balancing input while reacting quickly and efficiently - demonstrated ability to work well with tight deadlines while handling multiple assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex decisions, problem solve, practice hands-on management.
  • Attention to detail, follow-through and timeliness.
  • Passion for LGBT and education issues.
  • A strong desire to achieve program goals and professional growth.
  • Willingness to travel as needed (25-50% of the time).
  • This position is located in GLSEN's New York City headquarters.
