Name Me Nobody

Yamanaka, Lois Ann
Jul 01, 2000

At 14, Emi-Lou Kaya feels like a “white whale,” and a “dorky Jap nobody,” in her middle school on Hawaii's Big Island. Her mother left her, but she's been raised by her tough, loving grandmother, and Emi-Lou's greatest support is her longtime best friend, Yvonne. Many young people will recognize the outsider story, the vicious name-calling (about body image, ethnicity, sexual orientation) as well as the elemental drama of friendship, betrayal and love.
