TELL CONGRESS TO SUPPORT THE NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE!

Apr 16, 2010
Contact your Congressperson today and ask them to support the National Day of Silence!

As you already know, the National Day of Silence* is this Friday, April 16. In 2009 a House Congressional Resolution (H. Con. Res. 92) in support of the National Day of Silence was introduced in the United States House of Representatives. Forty representatives have sponsored it.

CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY and ask them sign on as a cosponsor of the National Day of Silence Resolution. Or thank your representative if they are already a cosponsor.

TAKE ACTION – CALL TODAY!

1. Find out who your representative is by logging on to www.house.gov/writerep/ and entering your state and zip code.

2. Go HERE to see if your representative is already sponsoring the resolution.

3. Call your representative’s office directly if their phone number was shown during step 1. Otherwise, call the House of Representatives switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask for your representative’s office.

4. Tell the staffer who answers that you live in the representative’s district, and you would like your representative to cosponsor H. Con. Res. 92 and support the National Day of Silence. SAMPLE LANGUAGE FOR NON-COSPONSORS

Please cosponsor H. Con. Res. 92, a Congressional Resolution in support of the National Day of Silence.

The National Day of Silence is a student-led day in which students take a vow of silence to bring attention to the anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying, and harassment faced by individuals in schools.

Our children go to school to learn, but if they fear for their safety, they cannot concentrate on learning. Research and experience tell us that addressing name-calling, bullying and harassment will help to address many education issues including school improvement and safety, along with academic achievement.

Please cosponsor H. Con. Res. 92 and send a message to our youth that you support their efforts to ensure that all schools are safe and free of name-calling bullying, and harassment; and in calling for schools be free of discrimination and safe for all children.

    SAMPLE LANGUAGE FOR COSPONSORS

Thank you for cosponsoring H. Con. Res. 92, a Congressional Resolution in support of the National Day of Silence.

As you know, the National Day of Silence is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. Your voice and support are critical to ensuring that every child has access to an education free from name-calling, bullying, harassment, and discrimination regardless of his or her sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Again, thank you for your support.

    * The National Day of Silence, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment – in effect, the silencing – experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies.
