From the Desk of Eliza Byard, GLSEN Executive Director
Dear Reader,

In the wake of her son’s tragic suicide, GLSEN supporter Sirdeaner Walker embarked on a remarkable journey to turn her loss into action. While she came a few hundred votes short Tuesday in her race for the Springfield (Mass.) School Committee, her perspective on the race gave me comfort in the midst of a difficult election night.

No Name-Calling Week: January 25-29, 2010

No Name-Calling Week (NNCW) is a project that focuses national attention on the problem of name-calling in schools, and provides students and educators with the tools and inspiration to launch an ongoing dialogue about ways to eliminate name-calling in their communities. NNCW has traditionally been observed in middle and elementary schools (with lesson plans developed in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals). This year, NNCW features a new high school lesson and short-film category to the Creative Expression Contest, focused on anti-LGBT name-calling and bullying.
