A Message from Eliza Byard, GLSEN Executive Director
Tragedy has a horrifying way of bringing things back to the basics--and 2009 began and ended with tragedy. A year that began with the first anniversary of Larry King's murder at school and then brought news of the suicides of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover and Jaheem Herrera, moved toward its end with three horrendous events in November: the brutal murders of Jason Matteson, Jr. in Maryland, and Jorge Steven Lopes Mercado in Puerto Rico, and the assault on 16-year-old Jayron Martin in Houston by a student wielding a metal pipe. Jayron had alerted school officials to the danger he faced, and the specific threat on that day, and they failed to protect him.

Think Before You Speak Ad Campaign Enters its Second Phase

After a remarkably successful first year of the Think Before You Speak campaign that accompanied significant shifts in teenage attitude toward the phrase "that's so gay," the Ad Council and GLSEN launched a much harder-hitting second phase that will focus more directly on the consequences of anti-gay language.

Sirdeaner Walker Testifies Before Massachusetts Joint Committee, Urges Passage of Comprehensive Anti-Bullying Law
Sirdeaner Walker, whose 11-year-old son Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his life earlier this year after constant bullying at school, testified Tuesday before the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on Education, urging the passage of a comprehensive anti-bullying bill.

GLSEN has partnered with Sirdeaner to raise awareness on the pervasive problem of bullying and harassment in our nation's schools.
