A Message from Eliza Byard, GLSEN Executive Director

In the mid-1950s, as much of the U.S. Congress remained cowed by Senator Joseph McCarthy and his ilk, an attorney named Joseph Welch finally called the Senator out on his reckless cruelty with a simple question: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

The time has come to ask that question of anti-LGBT activists in Massachusetts.

Get Ready for the 2010 Day of Silence!
 

On Friday, April 16, students across the country will participate in the Day of Silence by taking a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment. Help us make this year's action the best ever! Write to us about what is Day of Silence events are being planned in your school or community or how you plan to participate in or support the Day of Silence and we might feature you on the Day of Silence Blog! Email your stories to info@dayofsilence.org.

Be sure to check out the conversation on our Day of Silence Facebook Page and @DayofSilence on Twitter. And Day of Silence organizers should register their participation at DayofSilence.org to receive free buttons, stickers and more! But hurry... supplies are limited!

Student Advocate of the Year Nominations

It is that time of year again! Recognize an exceptional student in your community who is leading the effort to ensure their school campuses and communities are safe for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

The deadline for nominations is April 2 and the winner will be notified by April 15. This year's Student Advocate of the Year will be flown to New York City, all expenses paid, and honored at the seventh annual GLSEN Respect Awards-New York on May 24.

GLSEN Featured in "The Right to Live" Documentary

In The Life recently released "The Right To Live," a half-hour documentary investigating "bullycides," or cases of youth suicides motivated by bullying and harassment. GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard and safe schools advocate Sirdeaner Walker are featured in the film. Click on the link below to find your local television airtime or to watch the video online.
