Carrying
the GLSEN Message in Decatur, AL
by Eliza Byard, GLSEN Executive Director
Yesterday I traveled to Decatur, Alabama, with Sirdeaner Walker
and her sister Barbara. Sirdeaner addressed the 8th Annual Morgan
County Child Safety Conference, urging the assembled crowd to
take bullying - including anti-LGBT bullying - seriously as
part of their safety agenda in Morgan County, and to support
the Safe Schools Improvement Act as a step towards promoting
that same safety agenda in schools across the country.

a safe space for students to participate and by helping
students organize Day of Silence events in school. Use
this guide to learn more about the Day of Silence, which
takes place this year on Friday, April 16,

Remember Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover |
|
On April 6, 2009, an 11-year-old boy from Springfield,
Massachusetts named Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his
own life after enduring constant anti-LGBT bullying at
school, despite not identifying as either gay or straight.
For the one-year anniversary of Carl's passing, GLSEN
and Carl's mother, Sirdeaner Walker, have launched a campaign
encouraging supporters to sign a petition and call their
representatives in Congress to express support for the
Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA). Click the link below
to get involved.
