Carrying the GLSEN Message in Decatur, AL

Yesterday I traveled to Decatur, Alabama, with Sirdeaner Walker and her sister Barbara. Sirdeaner addressed the 8th Annual Morgan County Child Safety Conference, urging the assembled crowd to take bullying - including anti-LGBT bullying - seriously as part of their safety agenda in Morgan County, and to support the Safe Schools Improvement Act as a step towards promoting that same safety agenda in schools across the country.

2010 Respect Awards - New York: Monday, May 24
 

This year's Respect Awards - New York will take place on Monday, May 24 at Gotham Hall in New York City. GLSEN will be honoring several individuals and companies for their exemplary work towards making schools safe for all students: American Express, Pfizer, Cyndi Lauper, David Dechman & Michel Mercure, and the 2010 Student Advocate of the Year. Remember Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover

On April 6, 2009, an 11-year-old boy from Springfield, Massachusetts named Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover took his own life after enduring constant anti-LGBT bullying at school, despite not identifying as either gay or straight. For the one-year anniversary of Carl's passing, GLSEN and Carl's mother, Sirdeaner Walker, have launched a campaign encouraging supporters to sign a petition and call their representatives in Congress to express support for the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA).
