Senate Version of the Safe Schools Improvement Act to be Introduced

Jun 14, 2010
We are at an historic moment for protecting LGBT students—and all students—from bullying and harassment in our nation’s schools. While the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) has been around for several years and gaining momentum in the House of Representatives, for the first time ever there will be a Senate version of SSIA which is a crucial step forward.

We need your help to make this happen! Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) plans to introduce SSIA in the U.S. Senate by August 6th. This bill is similar to H.R. 2262, which was introduced in the House of Representatives by Representative Linda Sanchez. In order to demonstrate strong support for Senator Casey's bill, he needs as many Senators as possible to agree to cosponsor it.

CALL your Senators TODAY. Ask them to cosponsor the Safe Schools Improvement Act to ensure anti-bullying policies nationwide.

About the Bill The Safe Schools Improvement Act will strengthen the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to ensure that:

  • Schools and districts develop and use comprehensive and effective student conduct policies that include clear prohibitions regarding bullying and harassment;
  • Schools and districts focus on effective prevention strategies and professional development designed to help school personnel meaningfully address issues associated with bullying and harassment;
  • States and districts maintain and report data regarding incidents of bullying and harassment in order to inform the development of effective federal, state, and local policies that address these issues.
