No Name-Calling Week Helps Students Change Their World

No Name-Calling Week is taking place in schools nationwide right now. Educators are using GLSEN lesson plans, students are working on submissions for the annual Creative Expression contest and we hope to have an even broader reach this year than last with support from many new partners like Barnes & Noble who will help communicate the fundamental idea that students should have respect for all.

GLSEN's Policy Accomplishments in 2010

In the year just passed, GLSEN saw major advances in our key legislative priorities. Both on the federal and state level, bills were introduced, co-sponsors signed on and several pieces of legislation were passed. Our partnerships with many educational organizations has strengthened our work. And we have created and revised resources designed to provide tools for GLSEN constituents and the general public to engage in policy work in a variety of ways.

Department of Education Releases Guidelines for Anti-Bullying Laws and Policies, Includes Enumeration

GLSEN lauds the Department of Education for releasing comprehensive, common-sense guidelines for anti-bullying laws and policies, and in particular the Department's inclusion of enumerated categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity are the most effective at addressing all types of bullying.

Going to Creating Change? Attend Our Daylong Institute

LGBT issues in K-12 schools will be GLSEN's focus during a pre-conference workshop next week at Creating Change, the 23rd national conference on LGBT equality that will be held in Minneapolis the first week in February.

Safe Schools State(ment) Update

State legislative sessions have opened around the country, and there are several innovative safe schools bills that have already been introduced. Despite a challenging legislative outlook in certain states, we remain optimistic about safe schools legislation in several crucial states.

Brandon Hoffman, one of GLSEN's Student Ambassadors from Owings Mills, Maryland, is spearheading a new day of action. "No Homo Day," was held Friday, January 14, but don't let the controversial name mislead you, he's using the phrase to educate his fellow students.
