Ten
Years of GLSEN Research; New Survey Released
This new report, the 2009 National School Climate Survey, documents
the continuing crisis of anti-LGBT bias and harassment that
shapes the experience of so many young people. It also points
the way toward effective measures schools and educators can
take that can offset the life-crippling effects of a hostile
school environment. Recent events, and the glare of increased
media attention, have made it painfully clear that more work
needs to be done.

Ally Week: Giving Organizing Packets |
|
|
Each year GLSEN sends Ally Week Organizer packets out to students
who register for the event. This information is invaluable to
those LGBT and Ally students, especially those who live in small
towns and rural areas where anti-LGBT bias is often the norm.
This year we are asking you to help support the event that has
just passed. |

Addressing Anti-LGBT Bullying: Something All Christians
Can Support |
|
In the midst of the student crisis of the past two
months, the Washington Post published a column by Tony
Perkins of the Family Research Council attacking GLSEN
and our work. Fortunately they responded to our outreach
and posted a response from the one person perhaps most
qualified to attest to GLSEN's motives, purpose and
dedication to this work: GLSEN Board Member Sirdeaner
Walker.

The Sixth Annual Ally Week Comes to a Close |
|
Allies play a vital role in making schools safer for
all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender
identity/expression. The very first Gay-Straight Alliance
was the idea of a straight ally. Students created Ally
Week as a way to build upon the unifying work GSAs do
across the country by encouraging people to be allies
against anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment
in schools. |

Did You Know? |
|
Having LGBT-inclusive curriculum in school
is related to greater safety and school connectedness
for LGBT youth. Yet in the past school year,
only 11.7% of students nationally were taught
positive representations of LGBT people, history
or events in their classes. |
