Ten Years of GLSEN Research; New Survey Released

This new report, the 2009 National School Climate Survey, documents the continuing crisis of anti-LGBT bias and harassment that shapes the experience of so many young people. It also points the way toward effective measures schools and educators can take that can offset the life-crippling effects of a hostile school environment. Recent events, and the glare of increased media attention, have made it painfully clear that more work needs to be done.

Ally Week: Giving Organizing Packets
 

Each year GLSEN sends Ally Week Organizer packets out to students who register for the event. This information is invaluable to those LGBT and Ally students, especially those who live in small towns and rural areas where anti-LGBT bias is often the norm. This year we are asking you to help support the event that has just passed.

Nebraska Teacher Named 2010 GLSEN Educator of the Year

Omaha English teacher Ferial Pearson was recognized as GLSEN's Educator of the Year at the Los Angeles Respect Awards on October 8th. She has served as the advisor of her school's GSA for 9 years and has been active in GLSEN's Omaha chapter. Find out more about this school leader.

Addressing Anti-LGBT Bullying: Something All Christians Can Support

In the midst of the student crisis of the past two months, the Washington Post published a column by Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council attacking GLSEN and our work. Fortunately they responded to our outreach and posted a response from the one person perhaps most qualified to attest to GLSEN's motives, purpose and dedication to this work: GLSEN Board Member Sirdeaner Walker.

GLSEN Holds Congressional Briefing to Address LGBT Bullying

In light of recent tragic deaths of students who suffered from anti-LGBT bullying and harassment, GLSEN held a congressional briefing on October 14th at the Dirken Senate Office Building as part of our continuing work to educate Congress about the need to pass federal legislation to protect all students.

The Sixth Annual Ally Week Comes to a Close

Allies play a vital role in making schools safer for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. The very first Gay-Straight Alliance was the idea of a straight ally. Students created Ally Week as a way to build upon the unifying work GSAs do across the country by encouraging people to be allies against anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.

The Safe Space Kit
A New National Campaign

GLSEN wants your help to put a Safe Space Kit in every middle and high school in the U.S. Each Kit includes the Guide to Being an Ally to LGBT Students, which provides concrete strategies for supporting LGBT students, educating about anti-LGBT bias and advocating for changes in your school.

Having LGBT-inclusive curriculum in school is related to greater safety and school connectedness for LGBT youth. Yet in the past school year, only 11.7% of students nationally were taught positive representations of LGBT people, history or events in their classes.
