Feb 29, 2008
How accepting is your school? Please read the following four definitions and decide which one best describes your school's climate. You will be asked a question about this on the application for the 2008-2009 Jump-Start team. Is your school:
Hostile
A school that feels unsafe for LGBT people, where school policies do not protect the rights of LGBT people, there are no LGBT-themed clubs, and anti-LGBT language and harassment are commonplace. LGBT issues are not discussed in classrooms and there are no resources available in the library.
Resistant
Non-discrimination policies may include sexual orientation at this school, but anti-LGBT language is common in hallways, locker rooms and school yard, though not in classrooms. LGBT-themed clubs appear infrequently and students feel unsafe attending. A “don’t ask, don’t tell” atmosphere exists for LGBT people.
Passive
Students are aware that non-discrimination policies are inclusive of sexual orientation. There are LGBT-themed clubs, and LGBT themes are occasionally included in classes. LGBT people are moderately visible; they may be seen as “different,” but a safe and respectful atmosphere exists and there are few instances of intentional harassment against LGBT students.
Inclusive
School policy both protects and affirms LGBT people, and proactive education about such policies exists. LGBT themes are often addressed in classrooms, LGBT-themed clubs are visible, and anti-LGBT language and behavior are rare and dealt with swiftly and decisively. LGBT people are visible and fully integrated into school life; there is a high degree of comfort and acceptance regarding LGBT people.
