Tax-Related Numbers for GLSEN Chapters

Jan 01, 2000

November 13, 2000

Accredited GLSEN Chapters may need various identification numbers for a number of reasons. The numbers described below should meet most of your chapters needs. The Group Exemption Number and GLSEN, Inc.’s Employer Identification Number should be used in conjunction with the official letter accredited chapters receive annually notifying them of their chapter status.

Your chapter’s Employer Identification Number (EIN). Different for each chapter. Your EIN is a nine-digit number (for example, 12-3456789) assigned to your chapter, and other entities for tax filing and reporting purposes. It is equivalent to an organization’s social security number. If you are a chartered GLSEN chapter you already have an EIN, even if you have no employees. You received your EIN by completing IRS form SS-4. The chapter’s EIN is not the same as GLSEN, Inc.’s EIN. Many of your chapter’s vendors will ask for your EIN.

GLSEN, Inc.’s Group Exemption Number: 3525. GLSEN, Inc., a tax-exempt organization under IRC 501(c), has obtained recognition of exemption, on a group basis, for all of its chartered chapters in good standing. The purpose of the group exemption is to relieve chartered chapters from filing their own exemption applications. Use the GEN for grant applications and in other cases when your chapter is asked for proof of its nonprofit or 501(c)3 status.

GLSEN, Inc.’s EIN: 04-3234202. The national organization’s EIN.
