STAFF POSITION: Public Policy Associate

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the position of Public Policy Associate.

The Public Policy Associate will report to the Public Policy Director and will be expected to work on both state/local and federal public policy and advocacy strategies and projects.

State/Local: The Public Policy Associate will assist the Local and State Campaigns Manager to develop and oversee the implementation of strategies and procedures for developing statewide informational, educational, public policy and legislative campaigns designed to promote safe schools for all students in targeted states. This will include developing and implementing strategic plans designed to guide GLSEN, individual state coalitions and organizations, GLSEN chapters and student leaders, and others through the process of advocating for policy solutions to the problems of bullying and harassment, as well as developing and producing tools necessary to implement those strategic plans.

In addition, the Public Policy Associate will be responsible for monitoring relevant legislative activities in all states, with particular attention to targeted states.

Federal: The Public Policy Asscociate will assist with coordination of GLSEN’s federal-level education and lobbying activities, including, but not limited to:

  • developing targeted lobbying materials
  • assisting with the planning and coordination of Hill briefings and lobby days
  • supporting GLSEN representatives in their lobbying activities
  • representing GLSEN at selected national coalition meetings
  • Advocacy Toolkit: The Public Policy Associate will be responsible for the development and maintenance of materials designed to support GLSEN’s advocacy at both the state/local and federal levels, and for coordinating the development of materials with other departments within GLSEN. Examples of toolkit materials might include:

  • Fact sheets on GLSEN’s policy priorities
  • Talking points on GLSEN’s policy priorities
  • Tipsheet on how to talk to your legislator
  • Templated op-eds and letters to the editor
  • Phone scripts
  • In collaboration with the Public Policy Director and other GLSEN staff, the Public Policy Associate will also be expected to:

  • Assist with the development of effective local and statewide campaign strategies for promoting policy solutions to the problems of bullying and harassment in public schools.
  • Assist with the development of effective local and statewide campaign strategies that are tailored to the specific and unique characteristics of each targeted locality or state.
  • Assist with the coordination of GLSEN’s federal advocacy work.
  • Develop and maintain GLSEN’s Advocacy Toolkit.
  • Travel as needed.
  • Represent GLSEN at local, state and national conferences when appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Applicants should have:

  • a BS or BA in the social sciences,
  • knowledge of state and federal government and legislatures,
  • demonstrated experience with or commitment to developing broad coalitions of diverse groups,
  • experience with state/local and/or federal advocacy strategies
  • two years experience in state legislative campaigns preferred,
  • excellent written and oral communications skills, and
  • a willingness to travel as needed.
  • All applicants should be able to work independently and demonstrate supervisory experience or the capacity to do so, work within a team framework and should be committed to GLSEN’s mission statement and public policy platform.

    Salary is commensurate with education, background and experience. Excellent benefits are provided. This position will preferably be based in Washington, DC, though strong candidates based in New York City will be considered.
