STAFF POSITION: Associate Director of Development New York City

Description:
The Associate Director of Development works with the Development Director to manage GLSEN’s development efforts with the goal of maintaining and expanding GLSEN's individual, foundation, corporate and event donor bases nationwide. GLSEN’s fundraising efforts raised nearly $7 million in 2008 and plans to significantly increase that amount in coming years. The ADD is responsible for creating and utilizing systems to communicate between GLSEN’s Development and Operations Departments in order to measure and track the team’s work. . In addition to these management responsibilities, the ADD will be expect to be an active fundraiser, responsible for building and managing a high-end personal portfolio of individual and corporate donors and prospects and will supervise all aspects of the GLSEN’s membership programs including direct mail, telemarketing, e-appeal efforts, membership events and promotions in order to retain/upgrade current donors below the major donor level (less than $1,500 annually), expand the organization's current membership base, and develop ways to move annual members up the GLSEN giving pyramid.
Job Responsibilities:
Meets or exceeds personal and overall revenue goals for fundraising from individuals on an annual basis; specifically focuses on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and retention of Honor Society members (specifically donors giving $5,000 or more annually) and developing a personal fundraising portfolio that accounts for a significant amount of both sustainable and new annual revenue, with appropriate increases in each subsequent year;
Manages all of GLSEN’s corporate philanthropic outreach, creating and effectively enacting a partnership package (pitch and materials) for corporate prospects.
Is directly responsible for the development of systems, structure and reporting mechanisms necessary for communication between GLSEN’s development and operations departments;
Directly supervises GLSEN’s Individual Giving Manager and Special Events Manager, who are responsible for overseeing the work of GLSEN’s individual philanthropy efforts and the maintenance and expansion of the GLSEN Honor Society.
Effectively manages the development team to expand GLSEN’s National Leadership Council and national volunteer fundraising base;
Creates and monitors the annual major gifts revenue and expense budgets in conjunction with the Development Director;
Directs and supervises research efforts on prospective and current donors;
Keeps abreast of federal and state tax laws that may be relevant to individual donor gift prospects
Prepares reports as requested by the Executive Director, Development Director, the National Leadership Council, and the Board of Directors
Required Qualifications:
A minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated success as a front-line fundraiser, sales person, or similar position, with an emphasis on managing staff, effectively creating structure and systems, and corporate sales or development experience.
Experience working with national volunteer leadership teams, preferably fundraising teams
A proven track record of well-honed skills in developing long-term donor cultivation and solicitation strategies;
Success at meeting or exceeding clearly defined revenue goals;
College degree or equivalent;
Proven supervisory experience;
Suggested Qualifications:
Exceptional oral and written communication skills; a high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances; time management skills;
Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail;
Experience and a high degree of comfort and competence with budgetary processes;
A commitment to GLSEN’s mission and an understanding of its complex programs;
Creativity, energy, confidence and integrity; ability to multi-task and succeed under pressure;
Ability to be both engaging and professional when making presentations at events and meetings;
Ability to work well with others and to exhibit strong interpersonal skills;
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and donor database (i.e., Raiser’s Edge) systems
Supervision:
