Ugly Ducklings is an interactive resource to end bullying of gay and lesbian youth. It is a cutting edge multi-media Community Action Kit designed to educate and inspire people to take action against bias-based bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.

In the summer of 2005, community activists teamed up with lesbian playwright Carolyn Gage, play director Cathy Plourde, and documentary filmmaker Fawn Yacker to stage the play Ugly Ducklings, dealing with lesbian harassment, bullying and suicide at a girl’s summer camp.

From the play and the transformation of the actors to the characters came an educational documentary film and community action kit designed for families, schools, and communities to create safe environments for LGBTQ youth.

The goal of Ugly Ducklings is
to educate and inspire people to take action against bias-based bullying and harassment so that we can protect our children from the harassment and violence that can lead to self-harm and suicide and to give parents, educators, youth and other community members the tools to create safer spaces for all youth.
