GLSEN Research Briefs
The Research Briefs are a series of short reports produced by the GLSEN Research Department on a range of current safer school and LGBT-related education issues with findings from both GLSEN research and other sources.
GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCES: CREATING SAFER SCHOOLS FOR LGBT STUDENTS AND THEIR ALLIES
This brief examines current research on GSAs and highlights major findings regarding school safety, access to education, academic achievement for LGBT students, and access to GSAs in school.
INSIDE NEW YORK SCHOOLS: THE EXPERIENCES OF LGBT STUDENTS
This brief examines the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender students in New York state, using available data from GLSEN’s 2005 National School Climate Survey. Results from this brief demonstrate that New York state schools were often not safe for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and that this lack of school safety can have adverse academic consequences for LGBT students in the state.
INSIDE MICHIGAN SCHOOLS: THE EXPERIENCES OF LGBT STUDENTS
This brief examines the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trangender students in Michigan, using available data from GLSEN’s 2005 National School Climate Survey. Results from this brief demonstrate that significant percentages of Michigan students experienced bullying and harassment at school, often because of their sexual orientation and gender expression. The findings also indicate that the majority of LGBT students in Michigan lack the in-school resources and support which help to mitigate the effects of a negative school climate.
