General Description:
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is a national education organization working to create safe schools for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students, staff, and families so that schools become places where young people learn to value and respect everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. The Director inherits a strong program with a diversified revenue stream and a record of success. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development is charged with overseeing all of the organization's fundraising efforts and meeting the following objectives:

  • Managing a team of six professionals who are charged with developing revenue streams from major donors, direct marketing, corporations, foundations, and events
  • Building on GLSEN's strong development program by maintaining support among existing funders and identifying, cultivating and securing new funders
  • Developing and implementing strategies that maximize the effectiveness of program staff, board members, and volunteer ambassadors as fundraising agents

    Requirements:
    GLSEN is seeking a seasoned professional with a proven track record in nonprofit fundraising. Successful candidates will have:

  • Strong management skills and the ability to mentor and lead a team of professionals
  • An understanding of, commitment to, and demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and monitor fundraising systems
  • Proven ability to work with Boards of Directors and other volunteer fundraisers in ways that empower them to achieve concrete results
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • 7-10 years experience in nonprofit fundraising, and clear evidence of a firm grasp of the current best practices in the field
  • A high degree of comfort in "making asks" for gifts
  • A Bachelor's degree, with further study (CFRE, MBA, or graduate work in nonprofit fundraising) preferred.
  • An understanding of, and passion for, the mission and goals of GLSEN.
