Welcome to GLSEN Richmond!
GLSEN Richmond works to ensure safe schools for ALL students in the greater Richmond metropolitan area and Central Virginia. We strive to assure that each member of every school is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
GLSEN Richmond is most proud of the support we provide to Gay Straight Alliance clubs (GSAs) in schools throughout Central Virginia. GSA clubs have been shown to be particularly effective in reducing harassment and bullying through student-led peer-to-peer interactions. We offer GSA Summit workshops in fall and spring for youth to assist them in forming GSA clubs and carrying out programs and operations. We also supply GSA clubs with materials and program resources for the various GLSEN Days of Action such as the Day of Silence.
GLSEN Richmond has also been involved in local policy change issues and state-wide legislative efforts. Working with other community based organizations, we seek the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the anti-harassment or anti-bullying policies of local school districts. Board members attend Equality Virginia Lobby Day to inform state legislators about the challenges LGBT students face. We also talk with legislators about various pending bills that impact LGBT members of the school community.
The Public Education and Outreach Committee strives to increase understanding of the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth through presentations to various community organizations and groups of school professionals. We support college students who are future educators as well. This Committee also sponsors informational booths at community events to increase awareness of issues facing LGBT youth in our schools.
GLSEN Richmond's School Library Project provides LGBT themed fiction and non fiction books to GSAs to place in their school libraries. These books help students and their parents with the "coming out" process, help students see themselves reflected in literature, and develop allies among their peers. These resources are important for creating safe and respectful school communities.
We are an all-volunteer organization who rely upon volunteers to help us carry out the programs, services, and activities to further GLSEN's mission in Central Virginia. We hope you will explore ideas for becoming involved with the work of our chapter. If you have an idea of what you'd like to do, but don't see it listed let us know about it and we will see what is possible. Please consider a donation to our chapter by clicking on the donate button on our chapter's web page or by sending your donation to our post office box located on the home page. We are entirely funded through local donations and various fundraising activities and projects that we undertake.
Thank you for your interest, and we're looking forward to hearing from you!
