Chapter Organizer - Aug 29, 2014

August 29, 2014

Hello Chapter Leaders,

It has been quite a busy month in Field Services! We recently launched Period 2 of GLSEN Chapter Accreditation and the Back-to-School campaign, continued logistical planning of our Campus Pride College Fair partnership and moved ahead with the development of the Chapter Portal (formerly the Chapter Intranet). Looking ahead, the busyness of work will continue into the fall. In October, we will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, Ally Week and LGBT History Month, release the 2013 National School Climate Survey report and potentially welcome a few new Chapters from Atlanta, Springfield (MO) and Arkansas. As if that wasn’t enough, we will also unveil the Chapter Portal.

The Chapter Portal will be the new version of the Chapter Intranet. It will be accessible in a hidden and password protected area of the GLSEN website. Chapter board members will be able to navigate through four tabs of featured resources. The four tabs group resources under umbrella topics that mirror GLSEN departments and encompass all the areas in which we do work (Fundraising, Operations and Management, Policy and Communications and Research, Strategy and Programs). We hope that navigating the portal will be intuitive and help eliminate steps in local organizing.

Currently, we are through uploading resources and designing 90% of the portal. The project will move into the internal review process next week. We will then proceed to Chapter leadership user testing and finally to launch. Each board member will have an individual login and password. If you already have a login and password to edit your website, you will be able to use that information to access the portal. If you are interested in taking part in user testing please email us at Thank you for your patience and continued support.

GLSEN's 25 Days for Safer Schools
GLSEN’s 25 Days for Safer Schools Back-to-School campaign continues with Curriculum Week (September 2-5). We will be featuring the Ready, Set, Respect Elementary toolkit, the Developing Inclusive Resources Guide, Inclusive Curriculum research brief, our glossary of LGBT-inclusive terminology and Unheard Voices. Look out for a Chapter BSD package wrapping up the week next Thursday night. Are you curious about the remaining resources being featured in GLSEN's 25 Days for Safer Schools? Check out the complete listing here. Please be sure to keep the document internal as we need to build buzz around the campaign (we don't want to spoil the surprise factor). Also, the document details our intended plans but resources are subject to change.
Education Corner!
As part of GLSEN’s 25 Days for Safer Schools and this week’s theme “Educators,” the Education & Youth Programs Team would like to share with you an exciting new resource that we’ve just finished! The new Educator Events Calendar for the 2014-2015 school year can be shared with educators in your local communities. Feel free to spread the good news and the resource on your chapter’s social media. The calendar features a comprehensive list of GLSEN events, conferences we plan to attend and a list of community events that help educators highlight diverse communities and issues in their classroom.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out one of our latest blog posts from GLSEN’s 2014 Educator of the Year, Dr. Laura Taylor! Dr. Taylor offers some helpful back to school insight and ways in which educators in your Chapter’s area can become more involved in creating LGBT-inclusive classrooms in their school communities.

Chapter Events, Conferences & Summits
If you are interested in having us promote your events, programs, summits or conferences during GLSEN's 25 Days for Safer Schools Chapter Week please email us the dates, details and brief summary of what you want us to feature. During Chapter Week, we are also going to highlight local program partners and Chapter leaders. Please send us a list of partners that we should consider highlighting and pictures of your board (if available). These partners and pictures will be featured in blog entries throughout the week and campaign. If you have additional suggestions on how we can highlight Chapter work during our Back-to-School campaign email us at

Map of United States

We are now in the midst of Back-to-School and two weeks away from the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 to October 15 we recognize the contributions made by Hispanic/Latino Americans and celebrate their cultures. GLSEN will not release any new resources but feel free to feature existing resources or click here for additional history, fun facts and events happening in your local area.

  • GLSEN Baltimore celebrated the start of the new school year by attending and tabling at the 3rd Annual Baltimore County Back to School Festival!! The chapter met a ton of teachers, parents and students who are excited to learn about GLSEN!
  • GLSEN Greater Dayton joined the Kroger Community Rewards program. They are now eligible to receive a percentage of their local constituents' grocery purchase total.
  • GLSEN Orlando will be working with local volunteers from City Year to implement programming around No Name-Calling Week at the schools they work in. The planning will kick off in October.
  • GLSEN Tucson will hold a volunteer open house/community meeting on September 4th. The event is an intentional push to engage periodic volunteers to increase local capacity and a way to identify potential new board members.
