Position: Director of Education & Youth Programs

GLSEN is the leading national organization dedicated to addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in K-12 schools. We seek a creative visionary to lead the content engine of GLSEN’s core function: resource development, capacity building, and school stakeholder outreach to support LGBT-affirming school practice. The Director of Education and Youth Programs mobilizes and supports student leaders, educators, and other school professionals, and serves as a GLSEN ambassador for partner audiences, institutions and organizations.

As a member of GLSEN’s management team, the Director of Education and Youth Programs will help GLSEN achieve the goals of its new strategic plan in schools across the United States, including:

  • Supporting the availability and success of GSAs in the majority of schools;
  • Increasing educator support to LGBTQ youth so that all LGBTQ students have a network of adult support at school;
  • Increasing LGBT-affirming curricula and pedagogical practice and developing best practices for its implementation;
  • Promoting educational leadership opportunities for LGBTQ students.

General Description:

Responsible for leading the Department of Education & Youth Programs. Manage development and implementation of professional development programs for educators, curricular resources, and other school-based educational initiatives to reduce harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools and to promote accurate and appropriate representation of LGBTQ people and issues in K-12 settings. Manage our youth-oriented leadership programs, including resources for Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) student clubs and student-led actions, like Day of Silence, and GLSEN's National Student Council. Develop and maintain organizational partnerships with other national organizations working on related education and youth issues, and represent GLSEN at educational conferences, at other high-level events and on coalitions with ally organizations. Supervise Department staff and work with them on planning, implementation and assessment of Department goals. Develop and manage the department's annual budgets, and oversee other administrative functions for the department. Serve on GLSEN’s management team, charged with developing and implementing organizational development initiatives to strengthen GLSEN’s ability to meet its strategic goals.


GLSEN’s Director of Education & Youth Programs must have a strong knowledge of K-12 education issues and youth development programming, a vision for leading initiatives designed to improve K-12 school climate with respect to LGBTQ issues and to improve the health and well-being of LGBTQ youth, knowledge of new technologies for distance learning and resource delivery, and strong managerial and communications skills. The Director should have a strong understanding of intersections of identity, the changing landscape of U.S. schools, and questions of educational equity and how they affect the educational experience and development of students. The Director should have completed an advanced degree in education or a related field, have experience working as an educator or administrator in K-12 settings or in an organization working on K-12 schools issues, experience with resource and curriculum development, and have a strong knowledge of LGBTQ issues in education. The Director must also be able to successfully lead a team and work effectively with colleagues both within and outside the organization.


MA/MS/EdM in Education or related course of study. Minimum of five years of experience as an educator or administrator in a K-12 school setting or commensurate experience in the field of education, or minimum of five years of senior-level experience with an organization working on anti-bullying or anti-bias issues in K-12 schools or in LGBTQ youth development. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing programmatic initiatives, and excellent editorial and public speaking skills. Strong management, interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and exceptional organizational skills.

This position is located at GLSEN’s national headquarters in New York City.

This position reports to the Chief Research & Strategy Officer.
