Executive Order Bans Federal Employment Discrimination

The following is a statement from GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard on the White House signing of an executive order banning employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity by the federal government and federal contractors.

"All Americans deserve to be protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity without loopholes that undermine those protections and open the door for potential discrimination. GLSEN applauds President Obama for signing this executive order, a critical step that ensures that federal contractors cannot legally discriminate against LGBT people in employment. We call on Congress to build on this executive order and pass a law that expands these protections to all Americans without exemptions that open the door for discrimination."
