Pre-concert Conversations and Concerts by Heartland Men's Chorus

The Greater Kansas City chapter of GLSEN is proud to partner with Heartland Men's Chorus, Kansas City's gay men's chorus, in a pre-concert conversation about bullying, coming out, and living authentic lives.

Moderated by Kansas City Broadcast journalist Mitch Weber, the conversation will include:

  • Jane Clementi, founder of the Tyler Clementi Foundation, which is named for her son who took his life after being cyber-bullied in college.
  • Morgana Bailey, TED Talk sensation who speaks of living an authentic life. She came out during her TED Talk in London.
  • Debi Jackson, mother of 9-year old Avery Jackson, the first transgender person to appear on the cover of National Geographic Magazine.
  • Andy Schuerman, one of the founders of GLSEN Greater Kansas City and counselor at Park Hill South High School.

The conversation is especially relevant to junior high, senior high, and college students. It is open to anyone with a concert ticket to Heartland Men’s Chorus concert and starts one hour before the concert. The concert Identify features the piece Tyler’s Suite, which honors Tyler Clementi.

Both concerts will be at the Folly Theater, 300 W. 12th Street, KCMO.

Legal Issues for LGBTQ Students and Educators

The GLSEN GKC program for the spring quarter will be a discussion of legal issues facing LGBTQ students and for educators who work with LGBTQ students.

Jeffrey Mittman, executive director of the ACLU of Missouri. We wil have a short overview of legal protections for LGBTQ students and educators advocating for them, along with common issues with which the ACLU helps students and educators in this area. A few of specific topics are:

  • Equal Access Act and starting / operating GSAs.
  • Protections for and rights of transgender and gender non-conforming students.
  • Protections and recourse for educators who advocate for LGBTQ students who face resistance from superiors.

Andy Schuerman will be talking at the April PFLAG meeting about what the Greater Kansas City chapter of GLSEN has been doing lately.

Day of Silence / Breaking the Silence

GLSEN's Day of Silence is a student-powered event where youth take a vow of silence to represent the silencing affect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment. The Day of Silence unites students across the country and centers its power in non-violent student protest. This year's Day of Silence is on April 21st.

Please join GLSEN Greater Kansas City for a city-wide Breaking the Silence after school on that day. We will have a rally at Mill Creek Park (on the Plaza by the fountain) followed by a pizza party at LikeMe Lighthouse. Please visit our Facebook and watch your e-mail for details about times. Landon Patterson, who will speak about her experience of becoming Oak Park High School’s first transgender homecoming queen in September, 2015.


  • 3:15-3:30 - Arrive and Check-in at Mill Creek Park in the Country Club Plaza, make posters
  • 3:30-5:00 - Make some noise! And then, weather permitting, march to the LIKEME Lighthouse
  • 5:00-6:00 - After-party with pizza and drinks, guest speaker Landon Patterson; Open Mic (Must register during check-in or upon arrival at LIKEME Lighthouse.)
