Why We Exist
Bias and violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are endemic in K-12 schools, and school-based bullying, violence and harassment negatively affect millions of students annually. According to GLSEN’s 2013 National School Climate Survey (NSCS), 75 percent of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed in the past year because of their real or perceived sexual orientation and 55 percent because of gender identity or gender expression. Research further documents the multiple negative effects of such a hostile school climate, including increased absenteeism, poor academic performance, and lowered educational aspirations. For example: One-third of LGBT students reported missing a school day in the previous month because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable, which is a degree of absenteeism four times more frequent than that reported by students from the general population (30% vs. 7%).

What We Do
Since 1990, GLSEN has led the way on LGBT issues in K-12 education. Through pioneering research, program development, and advocacy, GLSEN has made the case for the urgency and importance of these issues, and identified effective school-based solutions. Today, GLSEN remains at the vanguard of the “Safe Schools Movement,” with active partnerships with the largest national organizations in elementary/secondary education, youth development and youth service, civil and human rights. The GLSEN-led National Safe Schools Partnership, for example, now includes approximately 100 member organizations, and within the past year, each of GLSEN’s bullying-prevention strategies has been endorsed by a federal agency as a best practice in education or youth development.

GLSEN Massachusetts has always partnered with student leaders and educators who are best positioned to make the case for change and lead local campaigns. GLSEN Massachusetts is proud to partner with Boston Public Schools to significantly impact 20 of the highest priorities schools to implement sustainable program activities to create safe and supportive environments and reduce HIV infection among adolescents.
