Community Mobilization Manager
Reports to: Director of Community Mobilization
Location: Remote possible, GLSEN has an office in New York, NY
Annual Salary: $65,000 - $75,000
GLSEN works to create safe and affirming schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We have been doing this work since 1990, and we are the only national organization dedicated to transforming K-12 school climate for LGBTQ students. We work at the local, district, state and federal level to effect systems change in education in the U.S., and we connect with an international network of organizational partners to support similar progress around the world. Our work has produced measurable improvements in the lives of LGBTQ students in the United States, and helped establish new norms of support for LGBTQ students in the education world.
GLSEN is in the midst of a major institutional transformation process, which is striving to advance racial, gender and disability justice across our national chapter network. To fortify, strengthen and grow our chapter network, which is actively engaged in creating spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to thrive within formal and informal educational spaces.
To ensure our continued success GLSEN is seeking a Manager of Community Engagement to join our Community Mobilization team. The Manager of Community Engagement is responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing training and capacity building opportunities for the chapter network, supporting GLSEN’s chapter network in base building, coalition building & participation, growing their local boards and volunteer bases as well as implementing National campaigns at the local level to GLSEN’s current chapter network of 44 chapters across 40 states.
The work of the Manager of Community Engagement will include advancing the departmental mission of deep partnership with local chapters and helping to drive organizational impact at the local level. This includes fostering the connection between local GLSEN chapters and the GLSEN national office, facilitating learning and dialogue across the network, and ensuring that local knowledge and experience contribute to continual evolution and improvement, and growing power for local school stakeholders. In partnership with colleagues across the national organization, the Manager of Community Engagement will work to ensure that all chapters have access to resources, training, and support. This position will also ensure that those supports reach and have impact at the local level and that the work GLSEN National produces is relevant, meaningful and easy to utilize.
- Develop & implement capacity building initiatives to support & strengthen GLSEN’s chapter network.
- Determine supportive technical needs to provide training opportunities to the chapter network.
- Develop and provide regular issues based trainings, to support the chapters in advancing racial, gender and disability justice in k-12 education.
- Support youth programs manager in creating capacity building & training opportunities for NSC & other GLSEN Youth participants including SHINE team members.
- Work with chapter leaders across the country to determine training and technical assistance needs within and across the chapter network.
- Support the Manager of community mobilization with the implementation of the GLSEN Fellowship program.
- Work closely with other programmatic departments within GLSEN to support the needs of the chapter network.
- Work closely with the Director of Community Mobilization to deepen GLSEN’s relationship with the National chapter network.
- Build relationships with chapter leaders & ensure regular, and productive communication of chapter needs to the National office.
- Support the build out and resourcing of chapter initiated projects.
- Leadership experience in community organizing, outreach, base building, capacity building and direct support work with membership based organizations.
- Leadership & Experience in creating trainings and capacity building opportunities for network based organizations.
- A minimum 5-7 years’ experience with progressive leadership responsibility within community organizing/coalition building, youth development programming, or education organization.
- Experience building win/win outcomes, generating, designing and deploying programming and campaigns that are informed by, and responsive to community stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work with students, educators, local stakeholders and other volunteers in ways that add value, expand their effectiveness, and improve their experience.
- Ability to work as a part of a cross functional national staff, coordinate effectively across departments, and act as a trusted messenger between national and local chapters.
- Manage the multiple and competing demands, under the pressure of multiple tight deadlines and budgetary constraints.
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
- Exceptional project management skills and experience.
Exceptional ability to build and foster strong relationships across difference.
- Strong management skills and the ability to mentor and lead a diverse intergenerational team of professionals and volunteer GLSEN Chapter leaders.
- Collaborative, innovative and entrepreneurial mindset to leverage opportunities to achieve shared goals.
- Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender and disability justice.
- Experience within medium to large non-profit, and/or social justice organizations a plus.
- Experience working on issues that impact communities with a wide range of diverse experiences preferred.
Travel & Position Location:
The Manager of Community Capacity Building may be remote and will travel to chapter locations predominantly in the United States (approximately 40%) post pandemic.
