GLSEN Massachusetts SHINE Team

GLSEN Massachusetts is excited to announce our launch of the SHINE program!

The SHINE Program is a student leadership program offering students opportunities to refine their leadership skills while working with their peers to make their local schools and communities safer and more affirming for LGBTQ youth. The SHINE program also offers students an entry point into conversations about educational equity, intersectionality, and gender inclusivity within the LGBTQ community.

Over the course of the school year teams will meet monthly to organize projects and events centering the needs and assets of their community. Projects from other SHINE teams include: Break the Silence events, GSA meet-ups, and Safe Schools Summits.

Applicants should be local to Western Massachusetts and youth applicants should be a current student in high school. Please reference the position descriptions below for information describing qualifications for team members.

Position Descriptions
Youth Member
Youth Leader
Adult Leader

SHINE members work closely with SHINE leaders and their fellow members. They attend meetings, work on projects, and help create respectful SHINE team environments.

Youth Member Duties
  • Work with team members to plan and implement group project
  • Attend monthly SHINE meetings
  • Participate in chapter and team events
  • Complete tasks and responsibilities as needed
  • Maintain a safe/brave space for members
  • Respectful of all SHINE team members
  • Hold self and group accountable to community agreements
Required Youth Members Qualities
  • Committed to working with a diverse SHINE team that values the identities, experiences, and contributions of folks of all races/ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, etc.
  • Dedicated to improving schools for LGBTQ+ K-12 students
  • Open to learning and exploring their own relationships to systems of power and privilege within the SHINE team and larger community
  • Willing to share opinions, passions, and interests with SHINE team
  • Able to invest time and energy towards being an active SHINE team member
Preferred Youth Member Qualities
  • Passionate about LGBTQ+ issues, social justice, and educational equity
  • Responsible, reliable, and organized
  • Ready to be bold, compassionate, active, and engaged

SHINE Youth Leaders work closely with SHINE Adult Leaders and the GLSEN MA Board of Directors. Together they recruit SHINE members, plan meetings, move projects along, facilitate activities and discussions, support SHINE members and model respectful behavior.

Youth Leader Duties
  • Guide SHINE team in activities and project
  • Plan and lead meetings
  • Create and maintain a safe/brave space for members
  • Holds group accountable to community agreements
  • Communicate with SHINE team members
  • Represents SHINE team to the GLSEN MA Board of Directors
  • Work with Adult Leader to ensure the space remains youth centered and youth led
Required Youth Leader Qualities
  • Willing to share their opinions, passions, and interests with GLSEN MA SHINE team
  • Dedicated to improving schools for LGBTQ+ K-12 students and quality of life for themselves and fellow LGBTQ+ peers
  • Committed to leading a diverse SHINE team that values the identities, experiences, and contributions of folks of all race/ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities, etc.
  • Passionate about LGBTQ+ issues, social justice, and educational equity
Preferred Youth Leader Qualities
  • Active member of GSA or other social justice related club
  • Willing to share their opinions, passions, and interests with broader GLSEN MA communities
  • Invested in learning about LGBTQ+ history and current events
  • Interested in and has some experience in youth leadership and facilitating discussion
  • Connected to and has experience working with their school and/or community
  • Responsible, reliable, organized
  • Energetic, empathetic, compassionate

SHINE Adult Leaders work closely with SHINE Youth Leaders and the GLSEN MA Board of Directors. Together they recruit SHINE members, plan meetings, move projects along, facilitate activities and discussions, support SHINE members, and model respectful behavior. Prioritizing youth leadership, SHINE Adult Leaders will offer guidance, insight, resources, and support as needed in service of the youth SHINE team vision.

Adult Member Duties
  • Support SHINE Youth Leaders
  • Guide SHINE team in activities and projects
  • Assist with the planning of meetings
  • Provide facilitation as requested by SHINE Youth Leaders
  • Creates and maintains a safe/brave space for members
  • Hold self and group accountable to community agreements
  • Communicate with SHINE members
  • Represent SHINE team to the GLSEN MA Board of Directors
  • Exhibit professional and appropriate behavior at all times
  • Familiarize themself with GLSEN's history, mission, and Days of Action
Required Adult Leader Qualities
  • Understanding of age-based discrimination and oppression impacting youth
  • Committed to honoring youth voices and leadership development
  • Actively works to acknowledge and disrupt power imbalances
  • Is comfortable and/or has experience coordinating youth centered programming
  • Passes a GLSEN background check
  • Understanding of systemic oppression, intersectionality, and ally/accomplice best practices
Preferred Adult Leader Qualities
  • Active with GLSEN MA
  • Experience in social justice organizing, activism, and/or advocacy
  • Experience in social justice organizing, activism, and/or advocacy
  • Keeps abreast of current events, actions, and legislation relevant to LGBTQ+ communities
