Defend Franklin County GSA
Last month, GLSEN Middle Tennessee attended the Franklin County School Board meeting and stood in solidarity with the students who started the first Franklin County High School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA). Now, a month later, the School Board is considering eliminating all student clubs solely to get rid of the GSA.
Banning all student clubs to prohibit the GSA from meeting is a radical proposal that would undermine Franklin County High School’s educational mission and denies extracurricular opportunities for ALL of their students.
Our research shows that LGBT students who have a GSA in their school are less likely to feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation, experienced lower levels of victimization, and felt more connected. We want our students to feel safe. We know that safety comes from affirming LGBT youth, not isolating them.
Join us and tell the Franklin County School Board to protect the GSA and its members. All you have to do is:
2. Enter your name and email address.
3. On the right hand side under “Copy Email to:” check ALL of the boxes (this will make sure the entire School Board receives your letter).
4. Copy and paste the following message into the message text box:
I am writing to urge you to protect all of Franklin County’s student groups because they provide education and social benefits to our students and community as a whole. I was disappointed to hear that the Franklin County School Board was debating whether the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) should be shut down and now that all student clubs may be eliminated. I urge you to not make this terrible mistake! As a fellow Tennessean, it is important to me that our schools remain safe and welcoming places for all children. The proposed policy changes would needlessly eliminate a wide range of student organizations that benefit students both now and in the future. I urge you to vote no on the proposal to eliminate student clubs.

By sending this message to the school board you are amplifying the voices of LGBT students in Franklin County and their supporters. Defending this GSA is a crucial step to ensure the safety of students in this school district, and it sends a strong message to other school districts across the state who would try to target safe spaces for students.
Thank you for your help and commitment to students of Franklin County.
