Portland Public Schools Memo on LGBT Staff
As the 2012-13 school year comes to a close, we want to provide you with an update on important work regarding support for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) students, families and employees.
Portland Public Schools is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for our LGBTQ students, families and employees. Our LGBTQ students must feel safe and supported at school, so that they can thrive academically and socially. Our LGBTQ families are similarly entitled to an environment in which they are fully included in supporting their student’s education. Our LGBTQ employees are entitled to a workplace where they are welcomed and affirmed. PPS prohibits any discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, and discrimination is prohibited under state law. (ORS 659A.003).
At the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, PPS staff will be provided with guidance and resources to ensure that LGBTQ students, families and employees feel welcomed and supported in the District. These resources will include FAQs for employees, students and families, as well as links to community resources and partners. School and district staff will have the opportunity to review these materials during staff meetings at the beginning of the year.
All PPS employees are entitled to a workplace in which they are welcomed and supported. LGBTQ employees have the right to be “out” in the workplace. Portland Public Schools offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families with a wide range of benefits. Employees may include domestic partners—of the same or opposite sex—in their health insurance benefits. If you feel you are being discriminated against, or your school or department is not a welcoming environment, please contact your supervisor or Human Resources.
We look forward to sharing more information with you in the fall. Have a wonderful, safe and restful summer.
