Youth Engagement & Activation Associate

Established in 1990, GLSEN is a multi-racial intergenerational LGBTQ+ organization working nationally and locally to transform K-12 educational systems and democracy in the United States.
Our mission is to ensure that every member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Our vision is for students to be able to learn and for teachers to be able to teach, schools must be at a minimum safe from harm.
At GLSEN, our shared mission and vision, drive all that we do. We coordinate a network of 43 chapters in 30 states across the nation, and we partner with local, state and national advocates and supportive educators, to transform our nation’s K-12 schools into the safe and affirming learning environments all youth deserve; through programs, advocacy, research, and public policy work.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Youth Engagement and Activation Associate will be a part of GLSEN’s Youth Engagement and Activation Department, which ensures that GLSEN continues to provide high quality youth resources and programs that increase the capacity of students nationally to create and sustain safe, respectful, and affirming school environments for LGBTQ+ students. This position will work with the Director and both Managers in the department to provide impactful programs and support for students to develop their leadership skills and build a movement toward inclusive schools.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Youth Activation, Leadership Development, and Capacity-building
- Manage key elements of national youth Discord server.
- Onboard new members.
- Monitor Discord channels.
- Share bimonthly newsletter.
- Manage engagement and channels for particular subgroups of youth.
- Ensure adherence to established safety protocols.
- Travel with youth participants and GLSEN staff to in-person events as needed.
- Increase opportunities for LGBTQ+ students to engage in GLSEN programs and build leadership skills, including drafting student-centered resources for events, campaigns, days of action, trainings.
- Support department staff in successfully executing programs and key initiatives.
- Provide feedback on department and organizational programs and initiatives.
Department Administrative Tasks and Logistics
- Execute logistics plans for virtual and in-person convenings, trainings, and events.
- Manage and organize data for all individual youth participants in Salesforce, Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Forms), and DocuSign.
- Applications for annual subgrants and programs.
- Registration and interest forms for key initiatives.
- Summarize data for program evaluations and impact reports.
- Maintain daily correspondence through students@glsen.org email account and summarize key takeaways.
LOCATION
This is a remote position, within the continental United States.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- At least two years of direct work experience in youth development. Experience working with youth from a macro/systemic lens; regional or national experience a plus.
- At least one year of project, program, and/or logistics coordination.
- One year of experience in K-12 student organizing/advocacy work.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field, such as social work, youth development, education, public health, and counseling, is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of youth development principles, best practices, and pedagogy.
- Knowledge of the U.S. education system and current LGBTQ+ issues in schools.
- Commitment to social justice and knowledge of anti-oppression work.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and follow through on issues in a timely manner.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to travel on behalf of GLSEN for special events, as needed.
- Strong belief in collective work and responsibility.
- Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Working knowledge of Google Suite.
- Comfort and quick learning curve with technology on day-to-day tasks (i.e. Canva, Salesforce).
- Enthusiastic support of GLSEN’s strategic vision, mission, and goals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee will or may be occasionally required to do the following:
Stand; walk; sit; speak and hear while communicating with others to exchange information; repeat motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; use hands to touch, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. SALARY RANGE
The salary for this position is $64,000.00 annually.
