GLSEN Applauds Passage of Colorado's Sex Education Bill...

NEW YORK - May 29, 2013 - GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and its Colorado chapter today applauded the Colorado state legislature for passing HB 1081, which would establish a comprehensive sex education program.
"Our youth continue to face barriers in obtaining accurate information and resources they need to make informed and responsible decisions to lead healthy lives," said Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN's Executive Director. "GLSEN applauds the Colorado state legislature for passing this bill in favor of comprehensive sex education programs that are evidence-based, culturally sensitive and developmentally appropriate to improve the wellbeing of Colorado's young people."
The bill introduced by Representative Crisanta Duran adjusts the state's definition of comprehensive sex education to be more inclusive. Under the grant program, all students will have the right to receive medically and scientifically accurate information regardless of ethnic or racial background, family income, ability, and sexual orientation or gender expression.
Although the program would not require all schools to teach comprehensive sex education, it does require any program receiving funding through the statewide grant program to comply with the adoption of evidence-based, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive standards of instruction.
GLSEN will continue to partner with policy makers on safe schools issues pertaining to LGBT youth. GLSEN's Office of Public Policy works with elected officials and other government leaders at the local, state and federal level to ensure that the best and most inclusive safe schools policies are considered, passed and implemented.
