Shine Team
What is Shine?
The Shine Program is a GLSEN chapter-led student leadership and advocacy program offering students hands-on opportunities to refine their leadership skills while working with their peers to make their schools safer and more affirming for LGBTQ+ youth.
Through a partnership with local GLSEN Chapters, the Shine Program also offers students an entry point into conversations about educational equity, intersectionality and gender inclusivity within LGBTQ+ communities. Lastly, Shine Teams benefit chapters by providing strong student leadership and expertise around local issues, which is essential to GLSEN’s work.
Shine works because it begins with Chapters. GLSEN Chapters are run by vibrant, dedicated volunteers who exemplify leadership and are committed to the well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. Putting Chapter energy and resources into the Shine Program is an investment in maintaining a connection to LGBTQ+ youth, their needs, and the future work of the Chapter itself.

It Begins with Shine Summer Intensive
The Shine Summer Intensive consists of two parts: a national intensive and a local one. The National Shine Summer Intensive is a 4.5-hour virtual intensive for all new Shine Team members across the country to connect and begin their onboarding to GLSEN’s Shine Team Program. National intensive topics include:
- Community Agreements
- GLSEN, Shine, and Student Leadership
- Shine Culture
- History of LGBTQ+ Organizing
This year’s National Summer Intensive is scheduled for July 28, 2024, so save the date!
The Local Shine Summer Intensive is unique to each Chapter and is hosted the day or weekend after the national intensive. Some chapters may conduct completely virtual local intensives or incorporate an in-person gathering. The core topics each chapter will cover include:
- Teambuilding + Icebreakers
- Leadership Self-Inventory
- Influence Mapping
- Community Needs Assessment
- Project Selection
Our Shine Summer Intensive is the kick-off to what will be an awesome Shine Season!
