GLSEN’s Four Supports

It’s important that the adults in school systems take a proactive approach to setting up a culture of LGBTQ visibility and support. Based on GLSEN research, we recommend four major supports that schools can use to cultivate a safe and supportive environment for all of their students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression: If these supports aren’t yet available at your school, click the links below to learn what to do next.

3. Inclusive curriculum and resources

4. Student clubs that support LGBTQ visibility, such as a GSA

Implementing these four supports in K-12 schools can help to address and prevent bullying and harassment and work towards cultivating a school environment where all students feel welcome and ready to learn. The four supports benefit non-LGBTQ students too, reducing bullying and harassment of all kinds, and making everyone more college- and career-ready by being respectful of LGBTQ diversity.
