GLSEN RESPONDS TO 2020 ELECTION RESULTS
Together, we have created a community built on our collective commitment to action for LGBTQ+ youth, and a better future for them and for us all. There is crucial and exciting work ahead.
The results of the election at the national level were overwhelming, and a resounding defeat for the Administration that attacked LGBTQ+ people at every opportunity.
We move forward with greater hope and a powerful sense of resolve about the work ahead to rebuild and repair our schools so that every LGBTQ+ child finds safety and liberation in education.
We have already accomplished so much, even over the past four years, making sure that more and more LGBTQ+ students have access to life-changing supports in school. Together, we have created a community built on our collective commitment to action for LGBTQ+ youth, and a better future for them and for us all. There is crucial and exciting work ahead.
Every one of you has been part of making this possible, and I am so grateful.
And every one of you has a powerful role to play in the work of rebuilding and repair ahead. We cannot forget that there is still much work to be done, or ignore the fact that some people out there right now are dangerously disappointed by yesterday’s results. They must see that we are here and on guard, ready to protect LGBTQ+ youth from day one. The work starts today.
Here are three simple things you can do right now, in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ youth and educators who had to go right back to school today. With each of these actions, you will help build the power of this network, leverage our past victories, and power our next wave of momentum:
Remind school systems everywhere that LGBTQ+ students and educators in our schools are protected from discrimination by federal law, and they must be safe – today and every day.

Thank teachers and educators for holding the line for their LGBTQ+ students. Supportive adults at school are the most important factor in an LGBTQ+ students’ well-being and success. The GLSEN National School Climate Survey showed us just how hard they have been working over these past four brutal years.

Whether you are a student, parent, educator, or policymaker, or simply one of the hundreds of thousands of concerned people who want to make K-12 a place of respect and affirmation for every student, and to play a role in ending anti-LGBTQ+ bias and violence for good, you are part of a powerful community poised to make a difference. Act today!
