GLSEN Condemns Gov. Abbott's Attack on Trans and Nonbinary Youth

February 24, 2022

Statement from Melanie Willingham-Jaggers (they/she), GLSEN Executive Director:

“Yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott directed state agencies to investigate gender-affirming health care for transgender children. This order wrongly characterizes access to medical care that is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other leading health authorities as abuse. When it comes to determining the medical needs of youth and children, we need to listen to physicians—not politicians. This latest action continues a series of ongoing attacks targeting transgender and nonbinary youth across the country who already experience victimization, including discrimination, bullying, and harassment.

GLSEN strongly opposes Gov. Abbott’s non-binding letter and all efforts to discriminate against transgender and nonbinary people. All children, and especially transgender youth, need the support of their family, friends, educators, community, and medical professionals. Denying access to gender-affirming health care will harm young people and prevent them from thriving and reaching their full potential.”
