About the Project

Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project centers the development, implementation, and expansion of inclusive curriculum and sports for LGBTQ+ students and educators. Changing the Game was created in 2011 with Dr. Pat Griffith as the director and curator of this new and groundbreaking program. Laying the groundwork with partners invested in supporting LGBTQ students, Changing the Game launched and is the leading program in supporting LGBTQ+ students in P.E. classes and sports in K-12 schools.

The relaunch of Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project adds new features and information to reflect the current needs and issues facing LGBTQ+ students with an intersectional lens, data from our National School Climate Survey, guidance on overnights and facilities as well as support for transgender including nonbinary students in the “classroom” and on the field.

GLSEN’s Changing the Game program has curated information to support and educate students, student athletes, physical education teachers, coaches, athletic directors/administrators, and families. This information shares valuable data from GLSEN’s Research Institute, insights and contributions for and by students, physical education teachers, coaches, administrators and family members from across the country with GLSEN staff sharing their expertise in the areas of LGBTQ+ inclusion in schools.

Despite the nationwide lockdown due to Covid-19, lawmakers, state and local officials are voting and continue to attack transgender student athletes and take away the opporutnity to play. Read and sign GLSEN’s Statement in Solidarity with transgender and nonbinary students. Together, we can fight to give all LGBTQ+ students the opportunities to thrive in their school.

GLSEN may also be able to come to your school or school district! Contact us at sportsproject@glsen.org to find out more or tweet us at @GLSENSports and let us know how things are going.

Students

On the court, the mat, the field or in the pool, we all want to perform our best! For many student athletes, expressing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity can be intimidating. Certainly when we can bring our whole self to our sport we all play better! That’s why working towards a safe, respectful and inclusive sports environment is so important but it takes Game Changers like you to advocate for inclusive spaces!

Whether you are LGBTQ+ or an ally, Changing the Game: the GLSEN Sports Project has resources to help you ensure that your school’s athletic environment is inclusive and supportive.

Speaking of Game Changers! Sign up and become a Changing the Game Ambassador! This program is for student leaders like yourself and all allies of any age who continue to take a stand for LGBTQ+ rights. Your advocacy is powerful and necessary to ensure school leaders, officials, and competitors engage in good sportsmanship and that includes respecting ALL student athletes. Game Changer Ambassadors have potential opportunities for media engagement, GLSEN’s platform to talk about your experience as an athlete and you will receive potential swag giveaways, resources to bring to your team, activity ideas for Pride game days, update on laws that could impact your state and school, encouraging shout outs from pro athletes, and your peers from across the country to let you know that you are not alone!  In the Resource Section below you will find resources to help you advocate for yourself and your teammates. You can also share this information with your family, coaches, and teachers too! However you want to get involved, GLSEN has a number of resources to make it happen! Be sure to tag us on social channels @GLSEN or send us an email at sportsproject@glsen.org  to stay connected.

Get your own personalized Changing the Game sports card! Submit a photo of yourself playing your sport, the name you would like on your card, along with a quote about why inclusive sports is important to you. Don’t forget to fill out this media release form if GLSEN has permission to share your card on social media and in educational presentations.
