About the Project

Would an LGBT student feel comfortable being honest about their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression in PE or when participating in an after school sports program? Do you know if your school’s physical education classes and sports programs are safe and fun for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression?

Changing the Game: The GLSEN Sports Project is here to help you evaluate your school and to implement changes, ensuring your school is respectful and safe for all.

We’ve made it easy to find and use the resources you most need. We’ve organized them by the role you play in your school. We have resources designed for students and student athletes as well as for adults including parents, coaches and school personnel such as Athletic Directors, PE Teachers or Educators. Our new resource on transgender inclusion in high school athletics is a great place to start.

GLSEN may also be able to come to your school or school district! Contact us at sportsproject@glsen.org to find out more or tweet us at @GLSENSports and let us know how things are going.

Students

On the court, in the pool and on the field, we all want to perform and have our team perform at the highest level possible. For many student athletes, expressing their sexual orientation and/or gender identity can be a scary thought or experience and can keep them from playing their best. Certainly when we can bring our whole self to our sport we all play better! That’s why working towards a safe, respectful and inclusive sports environment is so important but it takes changing the game!

Whether you are LGBT or an ally, Changing the Game: the GLSEN Sports Project has resources to help you ensure that your school’s athletic environment is safe and supportive.

To get started, take a look at the resources on the right side of this page. You can download the climate checklist to assess your school's efforts to change the game, take the team respect challenge or snap a game changer selfie. However you want to get involved, GLSEN has a number of resources to make it happen! Be sure to tweet us @GLSENSports or send us an email at sportsproject@glsen.org to stay connected.
