GLSEN Denounces Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's Proposal to Criminalize Gender-Affirming, Medically-Necessary Health Care
NEW YORK (December 17, 2025) – GLSEN, the leading education organization dedicated to creating safe and inclusive K-12 schools and learning environments for LGBTQ+ youth, condemns Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s efforts to criminalize care for transgender youth. This bill would allow for fines and jail time for doctors and families providing transgender youth with medically-necessary care, including care recommended by every major medical association in the country.
GLSEN’s Executive Director Melanie Willingham-Jaggers (they/she) provided the following statement:
“This bill represents a dangerous overreach of government power that threatens the safety and well-being of transgender young people and the families and medical professionals who support them. All young people should feel safe, valued, and supported, and that cannot be accomplished when fear and misinformation dictate whose identities are respected and whose families are targeted. Major medical organizations conclude that gender-affirming care is evidence-based and, for many young people, lifesaving, and the majority of Americans agree that politicians are not qualified to make personal medical decisions for families.
GLSEN stands with transgender students, their families, educators, and health care providers. We call on lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to focus on policies that protect young people rather than using them as political pawns and undermining their basic freedoms. Dangerous legislation like this sends a chilling message to transgender students: that their lives and health are political bargaining chips rather than matters of human dignity. Targeting transgender youth with punitive laws has no place in our schools or our democracy.”
